Best makeup trends for Diwali

Leave your mother's burgundy lipstick back on her vanity. Forget piling on the same shimmers you did with your Diwali outfit last year. This season has new rules, new textures, new tricks.

Namrata Soni, official makeup artist for Maybelline, says that while blue, orange and teal are the c
olours for this season, the first two work best for dusky skin tones. "You can wear a dark indigo if you're really dusky," she says. "Cobalt blue eyeliner would look great with a Diwali outfit - it has just the right amount of blue."

Two much? Bright makeup and bright outfits will make you look overdressed

Her tips: Soni also believes that this season is all about playing up bright lips or beautiful eyes. If you'd rather highlight your lips and "you're scared to wear bright colours, like orange or fuchsia lipstick, start by dabbing lipstick in the centre of your mouth and smudge it over your lips with your fingertips so it looks like a soft stain rather than a bright colour," she says. Want to highlight your eyes? "Too much eyeshadow with a shiny outfit can look overdressed," says Soni. "Instead, use a black Maybelline gel liner (one of my favourites), and then an eyeshadow or kohl pencil in blue, green or purple on the tip of the black eyeliner. This is a great way to complement your outfit."

Shades of the season
Ojas Rajani, goodwill ambassador for Inglot, says the festive season is all about shimmer, shine and sparkle: "Use frosty eyeshadows and exaggerate the shine with gold, copper, bronze or silver, depending on whether it's a day or night event".

Her tips: Pick products that are dewy and creamy. Turn to Inglot's Mineralised Dewy Foundation, cream-based eyeshadows and cheek tints in metallic gold and peachy silver. Finally, use your glitter eye pencils instead of regular eyeliners and Inglot's 3D high shine lipgloss. This way you can wear a simple white outfit and still look like a million bucks.

Sonic Sarwate, MAC senior artist, India, recommends red lipstick in a shade that suits your complexion. "Try MAC's Eden Rouge from the Style Seeker collection, or the classic Ruby Woo, keeping the focus of your makeup just on the lips," he says.

EyeHis tips:
Use at least one metallic element in your makeup. Try MAC pigment in Melon, eyeshadow in Woodwinked and Amberlights.

Always curl your lashes and use mascara to open up the eyes even if you are not wearing any eye makeup.

Use waterproof kajal and mascara to avoid smearing as late nights and crackers can make eyes watery
Don't wear the same colour as your dress on your eyes - no blue smoky eyes if you are wearing a blue outfit
For a quick touch-up, if you don't have too many products on you, use lipstick as a lip stain and a cheek stain

CREATE A LOOK
In a few steps

Namrata Soni: Start with Maybelline's Colossal Kajal, Hyper Curl Mascara in waterproof, and orange or pink lipstick. Remember to use a lash curler for maximum effect.

Ojas Rajani: Use creamy concealer on your T-zone and undereye area, creating a smooth glowy base. Add cheek illuminator for some sparkle. Apply coral or dewy, silvery shadow and maybe a jewelled green or metallic blue pencil on your upper and lower lashline. Top it with a volumising mascara. Soften the apples of your cheeks with a creme blush in coral hues. Complete this with a coral liptint and a soft blow-dry.

BrushSonic Sarwate:
Even out your skin tone with foundation and concealer. To dazzle in the evening, use MAC eyeshadow in Culturalized eyeshadow from the Style Seeker collection with brush #217 washed all over the lid. Use thin liner to define the eyes with coats of mascara on lashes. Use MAC Lip Pencil in Brick with MAC lipstick in Ruby Woo. Use MAC blush in Worldly Wealth to complete the look.
For a full face
Namrata Soni: Add A little bit of shine to your foundation, so that skin looks dewy and glowy. Play up your eye makeup - do a smoky eye in a colour other than black. Shades of purple, blue or bronze look stunning. For this, apply black eyeshadow or liner first, take a little bit of the colour you want, sweep it all over your black eyeshadow and blend well. Finally, add two to three coats of mascara.

Ojas Rajani:
Follow the same steps as the simple look given above, and then use a sparkly eyeshadow and Inglot gel eyeliner in jewelled colours.

Sonic Sarwate
: Try smoky eyes with a metallic touch. Start with foundation and concealer, use MAC Fluildline in Dark Diversion, and Style Seeker on the lid. Line the top and bottom lash line with Smoulder eye pencil, making sure it fills in gaps between lashes. Smudge kohl using brush #219 with MAC eyeshadow in Embark. In the centre of the lid, add a dash of Pressed
Pigment from the Sculpt & Shine Limited Edition collection. Finish your eyes with several coats of MAC Mascara in Zoom Lash. MAC blush in Sincere Will adds a flush needed to complement eye makeup. To finish the look, use MAC lipglass in VIVA GLAM 5 on the lips.
